Sometimes adding features adds friction.
But taking the time to set things up is one of the things you have to do in order to maximize your productivity. If you want to find out what works, then you need to spend some time setting things up accordingly. If you don’t, then you’re doing both yourself and the thing you failed to set up a disservice.
That’s not to say that setting aside diving in too deep into an app, a system, or a workflow isn’t a bad idea from time to time. Getting acquainted is the first step; getting friendly is the next. Staying acquainted doesn’t get you very far, but staying friendly certainly can.
Setting aside time and energy for yourself is important. Setting aside time and energy for systems or tools is only worthwhile if you’re setting yourself up in the process. Otherwise it’s just time spent, as opposed to time well spent.
