A friend of mine, Jodie Gastel, sent me some information on Facebook that made me both chuckle and think at the same time.
What she found via the completely undervalued Project Gutenberg was a book entitled The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue – A Dictionary of Buckish Slang, University Wit and Pickpocket Eloquence. Originally compiled by one Captain Grose, there was one particular entry that got Jodie’s attention:
Vardy: To give one’s vardy; i.e. verdict or opinion.
So there’s that.
