Tom Griffiths titled his new book The Laws of Thought for a reason. For three hundred years, philosophers and scientists have tried to write down the rules our minds are supposed to follow, certain that if they could just get the logic right, human thinking would finally make sense. It doesn’t work that way, and the laws of thought Griffiths actually traces are a lot messier — and a lot more interesting — than a clean rulebook.
What The Laws of Thought Gets Right About Logic’s Limits
Griffiths, a Princeton cognitive scientist, put it plainly in a recent conversation: logic is the ideal tool for solving problems where you already have all the information and the answer is certain. Math problems look like that. Constraint puzzles look like that. Almost nothing else does. Most of what we’re actually deciding — what to prioritize this week, whether to trust a new working relationship, how to plan around a future we can’t see — involves incomplete information, genuine uncertainty, and outcomes with no single right answer. Cognitive science tried logic first anyway, and after a couple of decades of forcing human thought into logical structures, it became clear the fit simply wasn’t there.
Hume’s Riddle and the Habit Behind Human Reasoning
This is where David Hume’s riddle becomes useful, even outside of philosophy seminars. Hume asked whether we could justify our habit of assuming the future will resemble the past — that because the sun rose yesterday and every day before, it will rise tomorrow. His answer was no. You can’t justify that assumption without smuggling in the very assumption you’re trying to prove: the only reason to believe the future resembles the past is that, in the past, it always has. Round and round. Hume’s conclusion wasn’t that this kind of reasoning was invalid — it’s that it’s a habit, not a logical proof. A pattern that’s worked out well enough for us to keep relying on it.
I’d argue that most of what we call a routine or a ritual is exactly this: habits stacked on habits, forming a pattern reliable enough to lean on without re-deriving it from scratch every single day. We love patterns because pure logic is too expensive to run constantly, and pure uncertainty is too exhausting to sit inside all day. Somewhere in between is where actual human decision-making lives — closer to logic than to raw emotion, as Griffiths would put it, but never fully arriving at either end.
